Apple: Video Game Industries' Worst Enemy?

Apple's iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch products have already completely wiped out the popular use of the Walkman or any other alternative mp3 player. And now it seems Apple has its predacious eyes targeted on the video game industry. With new fab games such as Angry Birds, Words With Friends, Temple Run ect., the use of apple tablets for game play is being seen more often.

While the technology in apple products, such as the iPad 3, continues to advance, it is still far off from the depth of gameplay available on video game consoles. Not only do they provide a larger screen, but also more variability in possible player "moves" and being able to play live with other players. However, now many apple games allow gameplay with fellow friends via Google accounts or Facebook. Also, with Apple products, one can play while sitting on the bus or waiting for class to start, whereas use of video games requires restricts game play to a set up television in your room.

So what do you think? Is the video game industry doomed? Do you see any necessary radical changes being made by the video game industry in the future in order to stay in the game?

  1. I feel as though the apple products will only enhance the competition between video game producers. With more competition, it forces video game producers to look towards new styles of game play. Also, as an avid video game player, I have found that the apple products are good for short term gaming, but they do not offer a dynasty or lengthened type of gaming style.

  2. As someone who plays their fair share of video games, I agree with the previous comment made by Jon that Apple's products actually enhance competition and advancement within video game console producers. The games and various apps made by Apple are clearly taking over America fast. Everywhere I look nowadays not only does everyone have an iPhone but people are also constantly on their iPhone not even texting, but obsessing over apps. Maybe it is more the addictiveness of the games rather than the actual quality, but regardless, our country has shown an obsession over iPhone games. I feel that this takeover has and must put pressure on video game consoles to do bigger and better things to win over the consumer. So, in the perspective of video game console manufacturers, I think that this change has caused much panic and pressure to advance the current video gaming technology. However, in terms of the consumer's perspective, I think that this evolution of games is great because it is in fact causing a faster evolution of our gaming systems.

  3. I agree with Jon's post that this will not take over the gaming industry altogether because these games being played on the ipad and the iphone are more short term games and more practical games for when you are on the go, or in class, or waiting for something. That being said, i think most people would still prefer to play FIFA in their rooms as opposed to draw something on their ipad because there is simply more possibilities with an Xbox or Playstation than there is with a game that is limited on an ipad and they would prefer this because it is a game that can be played with several friends in real time where as draw something or ipad games are maybe one-on-one where you usually have to wait for the other person to respond.

  4. I do think that the video game industry does have something to worry about. Not only do these games provide variably and a wide range of options, but I think that their convenience factor and price are what make them so successful. We can literally play these games anywhere at anytime. It is also extremely easy to download these games- it takes sometimes less than a minute. Also, most of these games are free, opposed to having to drive to a video game store and purchase a video game. Typical video games can be extremely costly, especially buying an x-box or a play station. I think this aspect is what makes ipad/ iphone games so successful. People want to save their money and get the cheapest, most accessible, and most entertaining game possible. The video game industry should be worrying!!
